Partnering with Helix Hair Labs we conceptualized a tool that redefines the standard for styling curly hair. This project was initiated to address the lack of adequate tools for people with curly hair.
Concept Driven Design
The industrial design phase was driven by a theme of 'weightlessness', blending aesthetics with functionality. The brainstorming sessions yielded designs that communicated a sense of levity and futuristic appeal, while ensuring the tool was intuitive and practical for daily use.In developing the Curl Definer, we focused on a design that would not only be ergonomic but also visually captivating. We considered how the tool would interact with users both during use and as a static object in a room. The final design achieved a balance between these aspects, creating a product that was as much a statement piece as it was a functional hair styling tool.
User Centered Design
Before design started in-depth interviews and ergonomic evaluations with a diverse group of individuals with curly hair was conducted. This research went beyond surface-level understanding, delving into daily routines, challenges faced during styling, and aspirations for ideal hair care tools. These insights were instrumental in shaping the Curl Definer's design, ensuring it addressed real-world concerns like ease of handling, reducing hair damage, and enhancing curl definition. Feedback from these sessions refined the Curl Definer's design iteratively.
Fight Gravity
The design of the Curl Definer is centered on the user — providing a tool that is comfortable for daily use. The lightweight design embodies the product concept of weightlessness.
